Tonsils Surgery

Tonsils are two tiny glands located on either side of the throat. They are a part of immune system of body and serve as an infection barrier. Your tonsils act as filters, capturing microorganisms that may otherwise get into your airways and infect you. They also produce antibodies to defend against infections. But occasionally they may not be able to control the infection completely and bacteria or viruses overpower them. This might make them inflamed and swollen as a result (Tonsillitis). It can be acute tonsillitis, when symptoms persist for 3-4 days, Recurrent tonsillitis, when it occours several times in a single year or chronic tonsillitis, which persists for long periods of time.

Tonsillitis is a common problem, especially in kids.

The tonsils are often only advised to be removed if they are creating issues, such as severe or recurrent tonsillitis (see below) bouts.

Dr. Eshaan Kaushik says, many home remedies can help in tonsillitis like using ibuprofen or paracetamol to treat pain, consuming a lot of liquids, Taking proper rest etc. A brief course of oral antibiotics may be needed if bacterial infection is indicated. However, Dr. Kaushik warns of certain complications that might occur due to tonsillitis like middle ear infections, scarlet fever, glomerulonephritis etc.

Dr. Kaushik remarks that he usually works to ensure that you preserve your tonsils because they are a crucial component of your immune system. However, in some cases, you might need to have your tonsils removed if your tonsillitis keeps returning or won't go away, or if enlarged tonsils make it difficult for you to breathe or eat. The surgery to remove enlarged Tonsils is called Tonsillectomy. Post-surgery, it often takes 7 to 10 days to recover.
